Wandering Resumes

An alpine lake outside of McCall Idaho
And after seven months of months of ponderin' the damage that Fissure # 8 had caused our Hawaii home, catching up with the ohana still hanging around

and tending to and harvesting my friend's medicinal garden, it was time to ramble on.

Started out by visiting my brother and his wife on Oahu's North Shore for several days.

Even with no map or GPS, you'd a thunk that it would have been hard for us to get a little baffled about our exact whereabouts on a small hike in the mountains, but we figured out a way. A few more thirsty uphill miles that I would have preferred but we were still home for sunset Happy Hour on the North Shore.

On our way to my son Giles' wedding to Lauren back in Virginia, we spent a week visiting son Hunter and future daughter in law Danielle in Boise, Idaho.

Above I try on the new suit my Mom sent for a test run in front of their new digs in Boise. As some family members were unconsciously worried that I might show up in a Mariachi suit or some such Hawaiian get up, everyone was relieved that I was transformed into a comfortable bank president.

Shakespeare might have written "apparel oft proclaims the man", but we have to give Mark Twain some serious props for taking it a step farther by saying "Clothes make a man. Naked people have little or no influence on society".

We rented a cabin for a few days in the old resort area of McCall. One advantage of living in a transient community for so long is that we now know people all over the world. Through the 1000 or so Facebook friends Lilly has, we can constantly meet them for visits, get tips about side gigs and recommendations about cool things to do in various areas.

We had two offers in Idaho. In the case of McCall, it turns out that erstwhile chef and shift leader with us at Kalani, Joanna, was cheffing at the The Shore Lodge in McCall.

However, Joanna does get around and accordingly we just missed her as she left for somewhere in Asia. Besides working with us in an isolated jungle kitchen in Hawaii, she also ended up at the The Ivy Inn in Charlottesville and interestingly we now find her in a tiny town in Idaho that we are randomly touristing.

Alas, it seems that birds of a feather not only flock together but are condemned to drift in and out of the small Nowheresvilles/Everywherevilles on Planet Earth.

Chef Joanna did advise us to save ourselves some greenbacks at the Shore Lodge Dining Room above and wander across the street to the dive known as Lardo's. Full of mountain men and locals and they knew her well when we mentioned her name at the bar....which, ahem, is a good thing, no?

Huffed and Puffed up to an alpine lake about an hour from McCall. I reckon it was at an altitude of ~7500 feet. First time I have been in snow in snow in many moons.

Idaho has over 130 usable hot springs, the most of any state. One day we went to the rustic Burgdorf Hot Springs

Another day to Gold Fork Springs

Flew into Baltimore to see my brother, then on to the purpose of the visit: Giles and Lauren's wedding.

Gave then a toast to welcome them to the family; my first public speaking in many years.

Breakin' it down and cutting the rug at the reception.

Visited my Mom in Richmond, getting the wedding suit just right. Then Charlottesville.

Onto my brother's family's farmhouse in North Garden, Virginia.

They had me ensconced in this guest cottage on the back forty. Woke up one morning wondering where I was this time.

On to Willy's World, Trout Creek in the Catskills.

Lilly's family in Fishkill and Courtland, upstate New York. Great Italian Food with her brothers.

My sister in Rye, New York. Dover Sole at their club.

Lilly's Mom dropped us off in at the New Hamburg train station. Spent the night and had dinner at a old school Greek restaurant with Lilly's nephew in Queens. He dropped us off for an early morning flight from JFK to the next adventure. Stay tuned gentle reader.

Thanks for stopping by
